COGMED Working Memory Training® is an evidence-based intervention designed to improve working memory in children, adolescents, and adults. Working memory is the ability to keep information in mind for a short period of time, while using it to carry out a task. We use our working memory every day to remember what we should do next, solve problems, pay attention, and learn. People with working memory problems find it difficult to stay focused, plan, remember instructions, and start or finish tasks. Research also shows that a deficit in working memory not only leads to difficulties with attention and concentration, but also to weaknesses in reading comprehension and math.

COGMED is the most researched working memory program in the world today. It is based on peer-reviewed research published by leading scientists and has excellent clinical results. Research shows increased activity in certain parts of the brain associated with working memory on neuro imaging after use of the COGMED program. Neuropsychological testing and other research data also consistently show improvements in working memory capacity and attention as well as executive functioning, non-verbal problem solving, impulse control, reading comprehension, and mathematical problem solving. The concept of neuroplasticity, or the idea that the brain can reorganize itself and change neural pathways, is what allows COGMED to effectively change the way the brain functions to perform at its maximum capacity. By training their cognitive functions, individuals are better able to focus, resist distractions, self-manage, and learn.Training effects evolve gradually, but the results are long- lasting. 80% of those individuals who complete the training notice results three to four weeks after completing the program.

The COGMED computerized training program requires 25 training sessions (approximately 30-45 minutes in length) over approximately five weeks. The training consists of a selection of various tasks that target the different aspects of working memory and is done online in the comforts of your own home. A COGMED-trained Coach also speaks with you weekly via phone in order to support your training. COGMED is different from other vendors because it is distributed only through certified psychologists and physicians in order to ensure you get the same results as the research.

The complete program includes:

Initial Interview and Start-up Session – The COGMED Coach determines suitable users during a 30 to 60 minute face-to-face appointment.

Training – The user accesses the training at home via the internet and speaks to the Coach once a week by phone in order to receive feedback and advice on how to get the most out of the training process.

Wrap-up Session –In the second office visit, the Coach will provide the overall results and review the outcome. A written report with the results is also made available.

Six Month Follow-up – The Coach documents training effects again, with more time elapsed and the effects fully emerged.

After the training is complete, users are offered 100 optional extension trainings free of charge, which are 15 minutes in length and may be used for up to one year. COGMED recommends that 2 sessions be done each week.

Payment is due at the first appointment. Although insurance is not currently paying for this service, some HAS (Health Savings Accounts) can pay for this training.
